Tools of the Trade - Crafting in the Forge

Our relationship with our tools is an important one. In Chinese Medicine and Tuina, tools become extensions not just of the hands and body but of the practice itself. Many of us utilize cups, guasha tools, teishin, moxa, needles, stones, etc. to meet the bodies systems at specific frequencies and depths.
Over the years, I have brought many tools into my clinical work. The ones that persist and have become a core component of my approach to this work are simple, ergonomic, and serve specific purposes. They engage the body in ways that are specialized and intentional.
I have been sketching ideas for tools and playing with prototypes for years, but the tools I have created for the Year of the Fire Horse are the closest I've come to what I have envisioned.
Over the winter, I set my forge back up here on the property. Though this time, instead of just working steel I decided I would try my hand with copper and brass to see whether or not I could shape these tools via hammer and anvil rather than machining, casting and 3d printing.
The result has been exceptional. Though I have crafted several templates, each piece is unique. They are adorned with hammered texture through the forging process that is both radiates beauty and feels timeless. In the hand, the copper is resonant and welcome. I have spent a great deal of time working on shapes that fit into the palm like an extension of the body. Each has several working services for the dynamic typography of the body.
I am building a supply of both guasha tools and teishin not just for my clinic, but for sharing with other practitioners who appreciate tools that are unique and crafted to high standard.
